Overview of the Institute
The Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine comprises three Centres:
- Centre for Environmental and Preventive Medicine (CEPM), headed by Professor Sir Nicholas Wald
- Centre for Cancer Prevention, headed by Professor Jack Cuzick
- Centre for Psychiatry (CfP), headed by Professor Stephen Stansfeld
Professor Peter Hajek heads the Academic Psychology section, part of the CEPM which is based at Whitechapel and includes the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit.
There is an active group of statisticians and a statistical advisory service headed by Professor Joan Morris.
The aim of the Institute is to be a centre of excellence in epidemiology and preventive medicine and to advance the discipline in all its aspects. The focus is on academic discipline, research, the translation of research into public health strategies and their practical implementation - all dedicated to the reduction of disease and disability.
The Institute was set up in 1991. It has a staff of about 150 and is active in undergraduate and graduate teaching. Research groups within the Institute conduct large scale randomised prevention trials, screening research projects and epidemiological studies into the causation of disease. It is a training centre in medical screening, and has earned an international reputation for its research and teaching in epidemiology and preventive medicine. In RAE2008 80% of staff in epidemiology were classified as 4*/3*, with a grade point average score of 3.05.
