Hon Consultant Psychiatrist
Research Excellence
Professor Bhui is part of the Environmental & Cultural Psychiatry Research Group. Current research includes a systematic review of the cultural competence literature, new data on suicide and self harm among ethnic groups, studies of discrimination and common mental disorders, and studies of chronic fatigue; new work includes investigations of personality disorder, work stress and interventions to improve work stress. The work on social exclusion of young people with multiple problems continues in order to establish more refined international studies of identity, culture, health and well-being. He is involved in the evaluation of a national programme to improve race equality in mental healthcare. Prof Bhui has championed cultural competency and cultural consultation processes to develop a skilled workforce that can deliver improved patient outcomes in a culturally diverse society. Professor Bhui's research interests include methodological innovations for researching health and social care in culturally diverse populations. Investigations are located at the interface between epidemiology and social anthropology to improve research quality in hard to reach and socially excluded populations and patient groups, for example, the homeless, and refugees and asylum seekers. Past research projects include: work with Somali refugees, mental health care and residential mobility; explanatory models of mental distress across cultures; ethnic variations of pathways through care; African Caribbean people remanded to Brixton prison; discrimination, cultural identity, and work characteristics and mental health; religious beliefs and mental well being; dual diagnoses and their prevalence in a range of services; prevalence of common mental disorders and pathways to care of Punjabi and English GP attendees; user involvement in health service planning and delivery; a survey of London's inpatient bed use by black and minority ethnic people; a survey of London's PICUs and their characteristics.
