The Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine was opened in 1991 by the Princess Royal.  The Institute brought together in a new building; the university department of Environmental and Preventive Medicine, headed by Professor Nicholas Wald FRS and the MRC Epidemiology and Medical Care unit, headed by Professor Tom Meade FRS.

After Professor Mead's retirement and closure of the MRC unit in 2002, Professor Jack Cuzick joined the Institute from Cancer Research UK to become the head of the Cancer Prevention group.

In 2006 the university department of Psychiatry, led by Professor Stephen Stansfeld, joined the Institute and the three groups became centres within the Institute.

In May 2013, Professor Wald stood down as director of the Institute and Professor Cuzick became the new director.
