A pragmatic randomised controlled trial of response to an invitation to self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) versus repeat invitation for cervical screening in persistent non-responders in Newcastle upon Tyne. 3,000 women in the intervention group were sent an invitation to perform an HPV self-sample; 3,000 women in the comparator group were sent a further invitation to attend for cervical screening. The secondary objective was whether women with an abnormal result would attend for follow-up.

A further objective was to explore whether uptake of HPV self-testing would be higher in non-responders in the Newcastle area compared with non-responders in our previous trial carried out in an inner London area with a highly-mobile population.

This trial has now ended and the results have been published.
