Trial of HPV vaccine completed: more effective cancer prevention

A new HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine that protects against 9 types of the virus – 7 of which cause most cases of cervical cancer – has now been fully tested in a trial co-organised by Professor Jack Cuzick.

The new vaccine offers significantly greater protection than the current vaccine, which protects against only two cancer-causing types of HPV.

Oesophageal cancers have become more common over the last 50 years and most are diagnosed at advanced stage, when prognosis is dismal. Overall ~85% of patients die within 5 years.

Early diagnosis would make a huge difference and the BEST-2 trial confirms a new screening method using the Cytosponge® could be key to saving lives.
