I grew up in West-Berlin, and graduated in Psychology and Medicine at the University of Hamburg.
I qualified as Neurologist, Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist at the Free university Berlin. I was Head of the Department of Social Psychiatry at the Free University Berlin, before in 1997.
I took up my current post as Professor for Social and Community Psychiatry at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry (Queen Mary University of London).
I have been an honorary consultant psychiatrist, Director for Research and Non-Executive Director with the East London NHS Foundation Trust and hold visiting professorships in other European countries.
Since 1997, I have built up the Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry which is located in the East London Borough of Newham (on the site of the Newham Centre for Mental Health).
Since 2008, I have been the Deputy Director of the registered Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit at Queen Mary University of London.
In 2012, the Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry became a designated WHO Collaborating Centre of which I am the Director. It is the only WHO Collaborating Centre specifically for Mental Health Services Development in the world.
