Karly currently holds a Cancer Research UK Postdoctoral Research Fellowship since 2013.

She completed her PhD in 2011, titled 'Sexual and reproductive health risk factors and risk of cervical cancer in developing countrie' from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).  She also graduated with an MSc in Epidemiology from LSHTM in 2004 and a BSc in Nutrition Science from the University of California at Davis in 2000.

For the past 15 years, she has carried out epidemiological research in areas of infectious diseases and cancer.  Between 2006 and 2009, she worked as an Epidemiologist, coordinating the WHO/ICO Information Centre for HPV and cervical cancer and supported other HPV research activities at the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona, Spain.  Prior to that, she also held a Pre-doctoral Epidemiology Research Fellowship from GSK and worked as study coordinator for hepatitis C-related research at the University of California at San Francisco.
