Profile

Dr Bourke trained at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and remained in East London to complete his house and senior house jobs.

After experience in General surgery, general medicine and general psychiatry he trained in hyperbaric medicine and diving trauma in Egypt, and Emergency medicine and then Neurology at The Homerton and Royal London Hospitals before starting his psychiatric training in East London.

He pursued higher training at The Maudsley and King's College Hospitals, focusing on General Adult, Liaison and Neuropsychiatry and conducting clinical research into neuropsychiatric aspects of movement disorders, deep brain stimulation, gastroenterology and neurogastroenterology.

He returned to The Medical School as a Lecturer and Consultant Psychiatrist to pursue research into a neurophysiological model of chronic pain and the functional somatic syndromes, focusing on striatal motivational salience.

The Brain in Pain projects represent a group of comparative neurophysiological studies into functional somatic syndromes.
